In contemporary Western culture, the "Self" is king. From the injunction to personal development ("Become who you are") to the staging of our lives on social networks, we are encouraged to build, solidify and promote a unique and permanent identity.

At the heart of Eastern thought, and particularly in Japanese philosophy, lies a radically opposed idea: the Non-Self (Anatta in Pali, Muga in Japanese).
